I am not sure if its already been thought of, but the SKP can be greatly improved in terms of stability and performance by migrating to SAP HANA which can serve as both database and application in a single platform/server. This would simplify the landscape and allow application code to reside close to the database engine thus improving performance and stability. The application can be developed within the same platform also in SAP FIORI.
Hardening and operationalizing our ability to use a HANA schema as a "Migration Object database" datasource and move towards supporting multiple "backends" similar to DMR/Concento solution is a must IMHO.

Since we are SAP partners, maybe it could be more cost-effective also to replace Microsoft SQL server with SAP HANA.
